I grew up in a sweltering city, cramped and congested, where the roads were littered with
decaying leaves and mud after the rain. A few African giant snails were buried, gnawing on their trampled brethren. The standing water attracted garbage and oil stains, breeding a multitude of mosq
uitoes. The more prolonged rains turned into ponds, from which I fished out many tadpoles and placed them in plastic boxes designed for goldfish, waiting for them to transform into frogs. Day by day, I watched as they grew until they became toads. Such is the scent of spring.
